Climate Change

It is easy to get bogged down in the massive amount of argument and debate on the subject. We address these in a small way on later pages but the main argument is about risk.

We can say with absolute certainty that

"....there is a substantial risk that the worst predictions about climate change will come to pass...".

If that is the case how can we ignore a "substantial risk" of an absolute disaster?

Arguments about degree likelihood are irrelevant if one accepts this view.

We submit (and suspect most people would agree) that even a 0.1% chance of total catastrophe should be attended to. What is more, actions today need not cost a fortune. What the Stern Report indicated so strongly is that if we ACT NOW it need not be unaffordable.

If we leave it till later (even a few years) it will

  1. Cost massively more and
  2. Require far greater effort, cost and sacrifice and
  3. Become more likely that it will be impossible to remedy. Clearly every day that goes by increases the chance that what have done is irremediable (i.e. we have finally destroyed all we hold dear with no hope of reversal)

Everything points towards the principal need for attention today as being not the credit crunch but the more distant but infinitely more dangerous "tsunami" of Catastrophic Climate Change.

Just because it is distant does not mean it is not lethal
