Why have an HVDC Grid? News Priorities

Against Supergrid Barriers Who opposes HVDC?

Why is agreeing design of the Supergrid so very important?

The worrying fact is that when the world wakes up ti its need to be massively more reliant on electrical power, the demand for natural resources, and finished product (cable or components) is likely substantially to exceed supply. More about the scarcity of resources here.

There is a real and grave danger that market forces will dictate which HVDC lines get built (ie the ones that make the owners rich) and these HVDC lines will not be the ones that Europe needs as a top priority. Increased pressure on all resources will massively reduce availability - so planning is essential. Worldwide demand may actually prevent the EU from having an adequate grid system unless it acts rapidly.

By the time we realise we need a particular link we may not be able to build it. We must plan now to avoid this trap.

The glory of planning is that it is the least expensive part of the operation - so why notget the plans started now so and then be able to move quickly when ready.
