Sources of Delay to the Implemenation of the Supergrid
A massive cost, particuarly in Urban Areas or areas of Great beauty is delay due to concern about either visual impact or other intrusions. Contrary to general belief buried cables or sub sea cables are often a preferred alternative simply for these reasons. In point of fact because HVDC cables are so much smaller than their AC equivalents they are generally far easier to instal both above or below ground.
Possible solutions involving following road or rail routes have been mooted. Each has their problems (eg rail access is not particularly easy) however they remain a possibility given the relatively small size of cable needed.
