Against Supergrid Barriers Who opposes HVDC?

Urgency

Q. Why is this project so urgent?

A - see below ---1....2....3

1. The devastating potential change in Climate is a reality that must be addressed - - for the arguments click here

2 Accepting the reality of climate change, the bare minimum we need to do (if we are to attain the objective of 80% renewable energy generation) is to be able to move electricity thousands of miles rather than the tens of miles allowed by an AC Grid - - for arguments click here

3 In order to do this we need to enable investors to invest in renewable power in the remote areas where it is most abundant. Therefore we need a grid system in place before the investment is made. Talk and agreements take time so it is all the more vital that we start all of this NOW. We can then get down to the vital task of building as soon as possible.

Additionally there is the very real danger that the grid will develop piecemeal. If this happens the links that allow arbitrage (eg using cheap hydro across the Baltic) will be built and swallow up resources better used elsewhere. Experts in the field predict shortage of construction capacity and materials - this must not be allowed to happen. (see page relating to this issue)

Only after business is sure that it can sell the electricity it produces where it is needed will it invest in the vital renewable resources we need for the 21st Century.

CONCLUSION

We have not got time for vascillation. Decisions need to be made NOW and NOT in six months... a year... sometime...maybe never...--for more about the arguments click here
